A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
